Maureen Bloomfield’s first job on The Artist’s Magazine was as a ghostwriter; she soon became senior editor of Watercolor Magic and then of The Artist’s Magazine and Artist’s Sketchbook. While she was editor of The Pastel Journal, she and Jamie Markle, editor of North Light Books, edited Pure Color: the Best of Pastel. As an undergraduate she minored in the history of art and later spent a year studying the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance in Florence. She has a master of arts degree in poetry from Indiana University (Bloomington). Her essays and reviews have appeared in Artforum, ARTnews, Dialogue, New Art Examiner, Sculpture, and in regional journals. Among her favorite artists are Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, Eva Hesse, and Louise Bourgeois. Of (younger than Louise Bourgeois) contemporary artists, she loves the work of too many to name.
Daniel T. Pessell, Senior Art Director: Daniel found a home at The Artist’s Magazine in 1998 after art directing various other titles as well as helping design web sites for F+W Media. He received his graphic design degree from the University of Cincinnati where he took an avid interest in history, photography and music. Daniel has been an active songwriter for over 20 years and has released seven independent CDs of original songs performed on voice and guitar (the latest, Dan Pessell, came out in December 2009). Along with his wife and son, he enjoys neighborhood walks and long drives through the countryside. Almost no one calls him Daniel.
Christine McHugh, Managing Editor: Chris has enjoyed grammar and usage questions ever since she learned to diagram sentences in the sixth grade (yeah, that was a long time ago!). After earning majors in English and French, and studying art history in Tours, France, she taught high school literature and creative writing for several years, and then worked in greeting-card land, managing a staff of editors and freelancers. After coordinating promotional materials at F+W Publications for five years, she joined the The Artist’s Magazine staff in 2005. In her free time, she enjoys walking in the park with her husband, reading, gardening and yoga, keeping in touch with friends and her grown daughter and son—and driving 10 hours to see her two little granddaughters.
Holly Davis, Senior Editor: Holly acquired her first book of paintings from the Cleveland Museum of Art after a first-grade field trip. From that promising artistic start she diverged onto a literary path, majoring in English and secondary education at Cedarville College. After a few years as an English teacher she began rubbing shoulders with artists again as a greeting-card writer and editor and picture-book author. Six years ago she began editing decorative painting and home decor books for F+W Publications, from which she moved onto the scrapbooking magazine Memory Makers before joining The Artist’s Magazine. In her free time she enjoys freelance writing, reading, visiting local parks and spending time with her two cats, husband, and, during school breaks, her collegiate daughter.
Cherie Haas, Associate Editor: After handling the advertising sales/coordinating for several of F+W Media’s properties including The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist, The Pastel Journal, WetCanvas.com, Family Tree and others, Cherie officially joined The Artist’s Magazine’s editorial staff in the spring of 2010. She has a strong love for creative people, and is passionate about all things expressive. Cherie is a dancer with the Cincinnati-based performance group Dante’s Gypsy Circus, and enjoys movement arts, literature, live music, and mostly, quiet time with her family.
