The old cliche that good things come in small packages proves true once again. Breaking the price record per square inch of any painting or object ever sold, a 2-1/8-inch tall portrait of George Washington sold for $1.2 million to an anonymous buyer at Christie’s auction house in New York. The portrait, by Irish-born artist John Ramage, which features the first U.S. president in full dress wearing his blue and buff officer’s uniform, is enclosed in a gold case holding a lock of Washington’s hair and decorated with his initials. It was painted Oct. 3, 1789, for Martha Washington and was last on the market in 1988 when it sold for $633,600 at Christie’s in London.
