Pastel Pick of the Week | Small But Striking

Congratulations to artist William A. Schneider whose pastel painting, Barn Cat, received the Best in Show award at the Pastel Painters of Maine’s 15th Annual International Juried Exhibition “For Pastels Only.” The exhibition ran from May 17 through June 14 at the Saco Museum in Saco, Maine.  The juror of awards was celebrated pastelist Elizabeth Mowry.

Barn Cat (pastel, 9×12) by William A. Schneider

At 9×12, Barn Cat is a pastel that proves that small can still make a statement. “It’s unusual for a small piece to receive a top award,” commented William. “I felt honored. A pretty girl petting one of the cats that keeps her horse barn free of rodents—what fun to paint!”

Is Your Painting the Next Pastel Prizewinner?  If you have a small but striking pastel—or a striking pastel of any size!—we hope you’ll share it with us in the 16th Annual Pastel 100 Competition. Not only do you have the chance to win significant prize awards, including a $5,000 cash award to the winner of the Pastel Journal Founder’s Award in memory of Maggie Price, it’s an opportunity to earn recognition and an appearance in the special Pastel 100 issue of Pastel Journal. The Pastel 100 early-bird deadline (which saves you some money on the entry fee) is August 1, so now is a good time to enter your recent masterpiece or to put the finishing touches on the potential winner currently on your easel.
