Made-in-the-Shade Set-up

Painting en plein air presents a lot of unique concerns. One of the biggest can be finding shade within view of the scene you want to paint. I’ve found a simple solution: I devised a way to attach a large umbrella to the folding chair I take on location. To start, I cut a 1-inch diameter PVC pipe into four three-inch long pieces. I then taped a piece of the pipe to each of the legs on my folding chair (see the illustration at right). When I’m painting in an area without shade, I simply slide the umbrella into one of the pieces of PVC pipe. As the sun moves across the sky, I move the umbrella to the other side of the chair so I can paint in shade most of the day. This set-up is also great for the sudden rain shower!
