At this time of year in Ohio, everything seems to take on a gray pallor. But I’ve got the perfect antidote to the dullness of another Ohio winter: bold, beautiful color! In Day Lilies Strata (above), artist Phil Garrett worked wet-into-wet with thick pours of acrylic paint to create this unique surface. The thick layers were rubbed back with alcohol, exposing the color underneath. Garrett painted the lily with matte acrylic paint, which contrasts with the high gloss of the surrounding orange and green areas. Ah, summer… we will see you soon!
