Revelation (2008, oil, 20×16) by Russell Harris
Russell Harris first appeared in the January 2004 issue of The Artist’s Magazine, as one of 20 young artists profiled in “On the Rise.” Six months later he wrote an article, “Secrets and Surprises,” for the June issue. About his meticulously rendered, allegorical paintings, he observed: “The fun for me is to choose the elements–often strange and idiosyncratic–and put them together. I want the viewer in front of my pictures to pause and scratch her chin. My paintings are little mysteries. They ask the viewer not only to look but to think.” Harris earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Maryland Institute College of Art; he teaches studio art at the Latin School of Chicago.
