Stan Bloomfield, of Bernalillo, N.M., takes a unique approach to pastel painting, arriving at powerful scenes through experimentation and persistence, which earned him an art prize in Pastel Journal’s 16th Annual Pastel 100 Competition: the Pastel Journal Award of Excellence. For Bloomfield, there’s no sacred pastel process; no art rule exists that shouldn’t be tested, or altogether broken. His methods for landscape painting, having evolved over 30-plus years of working mainly in watercolor, evolve through flexibility and experimentation—and it shows in his work.
