How would you like one of your paintings to hang in a pastel exhibition in New York City—in a space that’s just 2.5 miles from the Museum of Modern Art and 3.4 miles away from The Metropolitan Museum of Art? If your answer is a resounding YES, then now is the time to ready your entry for the The Pastel Society of America’s “Enduring Brilliance: The 41st Annual Open Juried Exhibition—Pastels Only.” The exhibition will take place from September 3 through 28 in the Grand Gallery of The National Arts Club in the historic Gramercy Park area of Manhattan.
The annual exhibition is a showcase of exceptional pastels by the most accomplished pastel artists in the U.S. and abroad. It is an “open” show, meaning that any pastel artist, PSA member or not, may apply, but it is competitive, accepting approximately 170 to 180 pastels out of 1,000 and up submissions.
This year’s judge of awards is Lora Urbanelli, a leading professional in the visual arts. Urbanelli—who has worked at the Montclair Art Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design—will award a number of significant prizes, including The Founder’s Award given by The Flora B. Giffuni Foundation ($5,000); The Art Spirit Foundation-Dianne B. Bernhard, PSA Gold Medal Award ($3,000); The Flora B. and Joseph V. Giffuni Memorial Award ($2,500 ) given by JoAnn Wellner; The Great American Artworks Gift Certificate (valued at $2,100); The Herman Margulies Award for Excellence ($1,500); The Pastel Society of America Award ($1,000) in memory of Flora B. Giffuni, The Pastel Journal Award ($1,000), and The President’s Award ($1,000) given by Jimmy Wright. More than 50 awards will be presented for a total value of $30,000.
