In the summer 2007 issue of Watercolor, we discussed how Colorado artist Dale Russell Smith spent years developing a range of techniques that allow him to balance free expression with tight control. Among those procedures is coating his watercolor paper with gum arabic. We offer more examples of his techniques in this online exclusive gallery.

sir your works are excellent and the colours are very dynamic. simply superb
really enjoyed the art show, gotta say that you truly have the eye for watercolor media. I’ve recently picked up the media and remember bits from school but for the most part i’ve spent most of my time in the graphite media. I think i’ve really got some work ahead of me to get to your level. one question though, what color really makes brown pop(out)?
Mr Smith
