I won't lie when I tell you that looking at artist sketchbooks is one of the things I love to do most. And I've found that the pages that I linger over are usually filled with landscape drawing sketches. It is like I can look at the drawing and imagine myself right there with the artist, drawing landscapes and taking in the sights and sounds of nature.

When I looked through our new eBook–Landscape Drawing Lessons: How to Draw Landscapes, How to Draw a City, and Tips on How to Draw Trees–I get the same "stop and stare" feeling. It starts with seeing how artist and instructor John Hulsey approaches drawing landscapes. From color choices that differ depending on whether you are learning how to draw a city or deciding how to draw trees in your backyard, Hulsey delves into the sensitivity you want to bring to your landscape drawings, both in your attention to color and light as well as texture and visual variation on the page. Hulsey also tackles the practicalities of drawing landscapes, including how to transport your finished works to ensure they arrive safe and sound at their destination.

conte drawing, 6.5 x 8.5.
In the next chapter of Landscape Drawing Lessons: How to Draw Landscapes, How to Draw a City, and Tips on How to Draw Trees, artist Gerald Brommer delves into how to capture a sense of place with on-site sketches, opening the pages of his own travelogue sketchbooks of places around the world. After reading it, I itched to pick up a pen and start discovering how to draw a cityscape that was familiar to me.
You'll also find a chapter on how to draw trees that puts the focus on recreating the overall impression of a scene that you get through color and texture, not through drawing every individual leaf on the tree, which is the biggest challenge I've encountered when drawing trees.
I hope you enjoy Landscape Drawing Lessons as much as I do, and let the techniques and methods you discover sink in so you are better able to attain what you want when it comes to your next landscape drawing.
