Darrell Brown used oil paints in this still life to produce core and cast shadows as well as highlights and reflected light.
What is a cast shadow?
An object’s cast shadow is the object’s adjacent shadow in which its outline is distorted. Cast shadow is distinguished from core shadow in that it is slightly brighter, and its edges are softer the further it gets from the object.
How to draw cast shadows
While it is not generally the focus of a painting, skill in drawing shadows is key to achieving perfect lighting conditions in your artwork. If you’re starting out, the main thing is to focus on drawing ellipses, and working with a reference image.
