Although Paul Lowe, our Artist of the Month, finds inspiration in nature, he almost always paints his landscapes from inside the studio. “I rarely paint en plein air,” he explains, “and prefer working in the peace and privacy of my studio.” A resident of Beverly Hills, California, the artist is surrounded by beautiful scenes that he chooses to first capture with photography. “I travel with my camera everywhere. It works out all the detail, and I work out the composition as I shoot.”
Once he’s back in his studio with the data from his camera and the chosen composition in his mind’s eye, Lowe begins his paintings by sketching directly on his canvases. “I sketch in detail and then go right into painting, adding layers and changes as I go.”
In his paintings, Lowe often merges architecture with nature, creating a contrast between hard lines and flowing shapes, and establishing a balance between the man-made and the organic. He uses Winsor & Newton and Sennelier oils to create his rich and luminous colors and paints on linen canvases or boards.

He has exhibited in the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association’s annual juried exhibition of 2004, and his work has been accepted into the 2006 Oil Painters of America regional show.
