Dan Thompson reveals his approach to creating lifelike, realistic portraits using the anatomy of the head to create identifying landmarks for precise drawing. You’ll learn how to measure the model to create realistic measurements. Then, use those measurements to create realistic proportions. Learn how to use the underlying structures of the head and neck to develop realistic forms as Dan works both from a live model and simplified three dimensional sketches and sculptures. You’ll also learn tonal development for accurate highlights and shadows to deepen the form, and capture your model’s features and expression in a beautiful drawing.

A little to rapid in covering important areas of drawing - Needed to take more time and slow down his presentation - Covered to much ground in a very short time frame -
My third time working with Dan, the other two being in workshops. He is a great teacher, very engrossing for those who love figure and portrait work.

Excellent very detailed the intellectual and emotional concepts. Presented carefully so as to understand it. Very complete could study this over and over. Very in depth doesn't talk down to listener. A complete anaylsis of the head. Highly recommend it.

The instructor was very informative and articulate with how he expressed and taught the material to keep you drawn into the lessons he covered. Thought certain parts of the layout process could be improved a little more with how it was recorded, so the whole process in the beginning could be viewed better. Overall, it was great! Plan on watching it again and using the course as a future reference.

Dan's explanation of drawing the head was not the 'same old, same old'. It gives one food for thought and a way
of looking we may not have used before. Made me think deeper about what I'm looking at.
Thank you, Dan

A study that includes an amazing lecture on the planes of the head; as well as an in depth review of basic anatomy that includes other essential aspects of the structure of the head. The lecture is well articulated and concise, and Dan Thompson manages to include an amazing amount of information in a relatively small amount of time. His love of the craft of drawing is apparent in his enthusiasm about the information he shares. A must for portrait artist of any level, I highly recommend watching this video more than once.

Great class for introducing anatomy of the head. Not only builds a foundation, but motivates for further exploration. Demonstrates a process based on deep observation and investigation. The method enables the artist with a reference frame against which he/she would compare and identify the unique features of each different model. This reference frame not only provides a better judgement, but trains the eye for seeing, rather than looking. Therefore, the artist becomes more equipped in time for future exercises.

Thank you! Amazing video! I took a workshop with Dan a few years ago, in Toronto, and enjoyed it tremendously. I'm glad to see Dan in this series. Dan, more videos please!
All the best,
Joe Saab

This is a great, highly detailed demonstration of how to both execute and think about the structure of portraiture. One disappointment is that there is a *big* gap between where he stops and the finished illustration--I'm hoping this gets covered in a second chapter? Beautifully explained by a very talented and articulate artist. Thank you Dan (and Marissa!) for taking the time to do this.
