The Grisaille Method with Jon deMartin

Sharing oil painting techniques, Jon deMartin shows you simple and effective ways to create realistic form with value.

Jon deMartin | Runtime (210 min)

Master artist and 20-year international instructor, Jon deMartin shows you simple and effective ways to create realistic form in How to Paint: The Grisaille Method. In this two-for-one video workshop (over 3 hours of instruction!), Jon shows you how a monochromatic palette is all you need to create stunning realism and dimension. Starting with an overview of materials, Jon begins with tips on drawing and proportions. He then takes you through the methods of creating both open grisaille (thin, transparent washes of paint to establish shape and shadow) and closed grisaille (building a full tonal and value spectrum) in oil, for results that will pop off your surface!

Why did the artist confine his palette to burnt umber and white? I thought grisaille painting makes use of black as well to get the full tonal range...

John DeMartin is a great master painter and a excellent teacher. His explanations of grisaille are very complete and motivating. Thanks!

Great teacher. He goes through the painting in 3 stages. Stage 1: The initial sketch in charcoal. Stage 2: broad brush strokes to get the values down. And stage 3 : Refining the values with smaller brushes. He does have a partially-painted painting ready for stage 2 and 3 already. But he takes you through to completion with the rest of the face. For instance he had the forehead of stage 2 painted in already. But he paints the rest of the face in the video. Would recommend it to any artist trying to learn portrait painting
