MATERIALS:
Watercolors
- Antwerp Blue
- Aureolin Yellow
- Bright Red
- Brown Madder
- Cobalt Blue
- French Ultramarine
- Payne’s Gray
- Quinacradone Magenta
- Scarlet Lake (orange)
- Winsor Yellow
Brushes (I recommend pure Kolinsky sable, but other quality brushes are OK)
- Fan brush
- 1/2-inch flat (or bright brush)
- 1-inch flat (or mop brush)
- nos. 6, 9, and 12 rounds
- Rigger (also called “liner”)
Paper
- 140-lb. cold-pressed paper
Other
- Butcher tray (palette)
- Dip Pen (with C-4 nib)
- Masking fluid (I use Pebeo brand)
- Masking tape
- Palette knife (small triangular, metal)
- Plastic wrap (several pieces, approx. 1 sq. foot each)
- Rubber cement eraser
- Ruler
- Spray bottle (pump style with clean water)
- Synthetic brushes (nos. 6 and 9 rounds)
- Table salt

I am a beginner and found this video to be very helpful in learning some basic water color techniques. The use of a pen to clean up the edges is a great tip. Additional information on color mixing and some instruction on determining how much water to use in the paint would be useful.

I'm a rank beginner, so this tutorial was challenging, but very rewarding. I was able to stop and start as needed. The instructions were always very clear, although my product didn't always look like Jan's. My final painting is vibrant although not beautifully rendered. It was great fun.

I would have loved to finish this tutorial, but the buffering was sometimes so lengthy that I lost the how to in it all.
It is a beautiful flower and butterfly, but again the buffering kept me from learning much at all. I got bored waiting for the video to start...
I revisited this tutorial and went from start to finish. I have painted along and I have enjoyed the outcome.
I will be doing this flower and butterfly with other colors to get a true feel for the dark backgrounds.
