Traditional watercolor paper stretching techniques include using tape, tacks, staples, etc. But these methods leave me unhappy with the condition of the paper once the painting is complete. Instead, I thoroughly soak my paper and lay it across my Masonite painting board, which is about 2 inches larger than my standard paper size. Next, I put plastic moulding strips around the edges of my paper, and clamp them down with eight-16 1-inch binder clips. Then I allow the paper to dry completely (usually overnight). My method keeps the paper stretched throughout the painting (regardless of the amount of water used on the paper) and the completed painting lies perfectly flat with no damage to the paper’s edges.
