Richard will teach you his process, which begins with thumbnail sketches to establish shapes and values. You’ll learn how to block in colors using loose application, then “break it” – soften and blur the edges of your color blocks using counterpoint smudging while Richard explains the importance of this step. Next, “make it:” develop your painting and define key elements. Finally, add in key accents to move the viewer’s eye through your work.

Sanded pastel paper (middle value tone; Richard uses Wallis brand with soft, warm tone)

Pastels
Variety of hard and soft pastels
Variety of warm and cool colors, and neutrals
Variety of values (dark, medium and light for each color)
Full Demo: violets, browns, blues, greens, pinks, oranges and yellows with a range of neutrals

Other
Pencil (2B or HB) & sharpener
Markers (3 values of gray: light, middle, dark)
Sketchbook
Viewfinder
Red acetate (to help see values)
Vine charcoal (as needed for drawing)
Foam piping (for smudging)
Paper towels
Pastel pencil (for signature)
