The term Telemedera was developed by artist Alma de la Melena Cox. It describes the blending fabric and wood that Alma has perfected. These collage art projects are truly interesting and beautiful. These vibrant colored materials create final results that pop off the wood canvas. By starting with a piece of wood, Alma will show you how to incorporate several mixed media techniques, creating a final piece that is unique to you. These fabric art collage techniques are great for artists looking to try something new or incorporate this style into their own works.
Step-by-step photos clearly demonstrate how you can replicate the same effects on your piece. Use stencil-work, wood burning, dimensional paint, fabric, beads, and personal items to add lines, textures and details to your Telemedera work. With 20 inspirational techniques and 10 start-to-finish Telemedera projects, there’s a lot to learn and a lot of fun to be had in Collage Fusion. " The projects and techniques you’ll see in this book evolved from my passion for bringing the unlikely elements of fabric and wood together in a process I call Telamadera Fusion. With Telamadera Fusion, you can create brilliantly colored and luminous artwork no matter your level of expertise. The words collage, mixed-media and fusion excite me with their limitless potential as materials are combined to make my heart sing. I’ll show you how to take imagery, the brilliant colors of fabrics, paints and papers, mixed with contrast, layers and sparkle to create inspired artwork." — Alma de la Melena Cox
When setting up for an art festival, I used fabric to spell the words Alma Art and adhered them to the wood of a sandwich board sign. At the festival, I displayed my art quilts for the first time and learned my first real art lesson: Not everyone will like your stuff.
A group of women came into my booth and proceeded to discuss their dislike for my work—in Spanish. Perhaps they thought I couldn’t understand them, but since I know the language, every word pinched my artist soul. Among all the negative remarks, one of the women said, "This is the only thing I like here, " as she glanced past my quilts and pointed to my sign. I was heartbroken. Some might think me naive, and I would agree, but I am also a sensitive soul who took it personally. It was the first time I had heard negative comments about my work.
It took a few days for me to remember that making art makes me deeply happy. I can’t say that I always see the glass half full but I’m grateful for those people in my life who sometimes force me to do so. That’s when the sandwich board spoke and said, "I am pretty cool." Well, not literally, but it did have my attention. So began my journey of bringing fabric and wood together.
After a few months of trial and error, I figured out how to combine wood and fabric into beautiful archival-quality artwork. To honor my heritage, I gave the process a name inspired by words in Spanish: Tela, meaning fabric, and Madera, meaning wood. Fusing these elements inspired the techniques that follow. They evolved as my curiosity led me to try things beyond the surface.
