Course Overview

One of the most important things in making art is learning how to see and then knowing or understanding what it is that we see. We?ll take these things, seeing and knowing, and then learn how to use our materials within this context to take your drawing skills to the next level.

In this shading course you will be learning how to perceive varying intensities of light and shadow, understand how our eyes perceive and continually adjust to light and dark, and how to use this information when learning and using techniques with pencil and charcoal, of applying subtly blended shades from light grey to very dark. Then, put this all together to create powerful illusions of form and light in your work.

What You’ll Learn

  • How light and shadow falls on objects to describe form and volume.
  • The way light reflects off of objects.
  • How light falls through space around and between objects.
  • Color and how it translates into black and white values.
  • Using shading as a powerful tool for creating mass and volume of objects.
  • Creating atmosphere in a composition through value and edge control.
  • Using value to bring meaning and expression into your work.

Student Testimonials:

I enjoyed this course taught by Lucy Barber very much. The information was well presented and very useful. I learned a great deal and hope to continue using what I have learned in the future. ~ Patricia K.

Wonderful to have a course offered that addresses what to do with your lovely line drawing…what’s next? Excellent exercises in the use of deliberate value and mass as the next step in your personal art journey bridging the gap between beginner lessons and the real deal. Enjoyed it very much. Sweet instructor. ~ Susan L.

I think working with the charcoals in determining the correct values will help me battle preconceived notions about how to portray subject matter in a painting. Sticking to what I see and the correct values will help me overcome some of the frustrations with my paintings, I hope! ~ Patricia W.
