Unlock the secrets of classical oil painting!

Discover one reliable approach for painting any subject realistically.

Your mentor in the atelier tradition, Lea Colie Wight knows how to introduce artists to the joys of oil painting. She has a keen sense of how to develop students’ confidence by building skill upon skill. In this way, Foundations of Classical Oil Painting demystifies the process, providing a simple, straightforward approach to realistic results. Inside you’ll find:

  • Comprehensive lessons on composition, values, gesture and other key elements, with strong emphasis on accurate colors
  • The secrets of Grisaille painting, used by masters for centuries
  • Simple exercises for building painterly confidence and foundational skills
  • 4 start-to-finish demonstrations that illustrate the same approach applied to figure, portrait, still life and landscape subjects

Wight addresses practical points commonly omitted by other oil painting books—everything from advice on fine-tuning still life arrangements and working with live models, to where to start a painting and how to “check” yourself along the way to ensure you’re still on the right path. Readers will come away with proud results, more enjoyable painting sessions and a signature way of working from life, regardless of subject or medium.
