What You’ll Learn

Learn to capture light in pure pigment with these pastel painting techniques from Alain Picard. First, you?ll learn about warm and cool colors, and how confining your choices to only a certain part of the color wheel (analogous colors) can lead to a harmonious painting. Then, follow along, step-by-step as Alain demonstrates how to paint trees on a hill, layering and blending colors and working dark to light using various pastel painting techniques and strokes. With easy lessons and great subject matter, you?ll be painting your own landscape art in no time!

Following the landscape, follow along as Alain paints a simple, yet striking still life of apples. You?ll start by learning how light wraps around a spherical object, creating form through light, shadows and value in a quick value study. Then, Alain demonstrates how to set up and illuminate apples on a piece of glass to compose a dramatic still life set up.

Finally, learn to paint a figure in pastel as Alain breaks down the steps to paint a woman sitting in a patch of sun, demonstrating how to simplify the image to make it easy to paint accurately. You’ll learn how to paint the light and shadows to give form and depth, as well as capture the gesture and life of the subject. With each step, you’ll learn pastel painting techniques to establish edges, use alcohol to create the underpainting, techniques for composition, and more, to paint a figure, start to finish.

Skill Level

This course is right for beginning and intermediate artists. If you’ve never worked with pastels before, you might find this course challenging. For those who are working with pastels for the first time, consider first taking: Pastel for Beginners
