First of all, I am familiar with Betsy Dillard Stroud. I have a couple of her books. I am familiar with her style. I find her to be a creative genius and an extremely talented artist.
In the beginning of the video, she says she practiced this technique (of beginning a painting with a pour) for the first time in 1989. She continues to sometimes use this
approach for a painting. From that point on, she takes an intuitive approach and continues to work on the painting. She talks out loud while she makes decisions and tells
the viewers why she is choosing certain colors, and why she is placing them there, and so on. The object of the exercise is that it's about being intuitive and I think she gets
that point across. She gives helpful information along the way, referring to the "principles of design" and so on. She uses a variety of products, beginning with the
watercolor. She progresses to using some acrylics. She introduces us to some beautiful colors from Holbein, and is basically using a limited palette and a version of the
primaries. I was very interested to hear that Holbein has numerous shades of grey and she used one of them. She mixed some of the watercolors with the grey, and
made beautiful neutrals/areas for the eye to rest. I am anxious to order that particular grey. She used other products: fluid acrylics, gouache, and white gesso. She used a little black and
did some calligraphic work, i.e., the beauty of line. She gave a helpful hint about making your own collage; a technique I had never heard of. In short, I picked up on lots of new
techniques watching this and I got to see how her brain worked while she painted. I am 100% happy that I ordered this. I've been painting for over 20 years.
