About the Author

Liz Haywood-Sullivan has been dedicated to pastel painting since 1996. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and she often leads workshops and demonstrations around the country and her work has been included in exhibits in many local and national museums and shows. Liz Haywood-Sullivan has also been included in many private and corporate collections.

1. Introduction–covers the project, a few sample photos, etc.

2. Plein Air Materials

3. Choose Your Location–3 different locations around the pond doing thumbnails to see what composition would best work, talks about elements that work and don’t in plein air

4. Determine Your Composition–horizontal vs. vertical, using the view finder; working it out in her sketchbook

5. Capture the Values–Laying down the outline and values on the panel in charcoal–1st step of actual painting; notes on sketches for colors

6. Choose Your Pastels–2nd layer, establishing lightest lights and darkest darks, pulling out the pastels needed to finish the painting

7. Paint a Full Layer of Colors–Adding color to each of the major elements of the painting

8. Refine and Correct Your Painting–Adding back in some lost darks, some lost and found elements, adding reflections in the water, setting the background back into the distance with a blue and purple haze

9. Wrap-Up
