Linda Kemp addresses not just her negative painting approach and wet-on-wet technique, but how to handle the background, limits on color use and the way in which hues and values play against positive and negative shapes, the creating of texture, and the unpredictability of watercolor. Definitely a keeper and something I can reference again and again.
I'm new at playing with color. I love watercolors. I knew about hues and values, but as a result of this video, I understand them, and it had a huge impact on the output of my watercolor play. I had learned about wet paper (front and back) watching Jean Pederson, but Linda Kemp's technique was sufficiently unique to expand my understanding of why it's useful and how it impacts the application of color to the canvas. I remember looking at the part of the video where she shows basic negative painting using a simple set of three leaves, and wondering what that had to do with the picture on the front of the DVD. Does that tell you how new I am? Well, I slept on it, and sometime around 3 am, I woke up and understood how the beautiful interaction between colors added to painting in the negative. What a lesson. I'm still watching this video and finding myself saying, "hmmm... I don't remember seeing that before!" If I lost this, I'd buy it again!
This is an unusual technique. The DVD helps you appreciate how much negative space can create an interesting texture and perspective in an expert's hands. While I may not use this specific technique in my own paintings, it was helpful to "see" negative space in a new light so that I can begin to use it to my advantage.
