Landscape Painting in Pastel: Spring Greens
Spring green landscapes are beautiful, but how do we capture all that new green foliage with our pastels? In this video, you'll learn how to start by looking at the big shapes and managing your colors, using composition and underpainting techniques to give your painting a strong foundation. You'll use initial layers of complementary color, then add pastel layers of warm and cool colors to indicate reflections, bounced light, and depth in shadows. Finally, you'll add highlights that give final realistic pop to the painting. Let Liz show you how to capture the vibrance and life of the spring green landscape.
Landscape Painting in Pastel: Summer Waves
Capture seascapes in pastel with help from this video as you follow along with Liz Haywood-Sullivan to paint a close-up crashing wave! You'll learn how to capture the movement of a wave in motion--the gorgeous sunlight that glows through the wave's crest, the foam patterns, and the mist and spray. You'll learn how easy it can be to paint water in pastel with layers of transparency. Liz shows you how to start by underpainting the darks, then how to develop the water by adding a layer of sky reflections from above with your pastels. From there you'll use your pastels to paint what sits on top, like the seafoam. And finally, add the lightest lights of water spray and mist, ultimately capturing the vibrance and life of the sea.
Landscape Painting in Pastel: Fall Color
As artists we love to capture the Fall season in paint--the sun's slanting rays and the abundance of color are perfect for painting. But how do we capture all that color in pastel without it looking too garish? In this video, you'll learn how to utilize a colorful underpainting to create a strong foundation, toning it down with additional layers of color to achieve a realistic landscape painting. From adding blues on top of the green grasses to show the sky's reflection, to adding greens on top of orange tree foliage and then layering bright oranges back on top again, you'll see how pastels are the perfect medium to create a fall landscape painting.
Landscape Painting in Pastel: Winter Mood
Follow along with this video demonstration to paint a wintery, blustery day in the mountains with light layers of pastel on black paper. Using black paper allows for delicate linework that will help you control the value of the pastel on this dark surface. Liz shows you how fun this can be! She starts with a review of composition, then shows you how to choose a variety of "whites" to indicate distance and closer snowy objects. As you build the painting from light layers to heavier textures, you'll learn lessons for how to paint trees and grasses using positive and negative painting techniques, and how to add the final details of falling, blowing snow that sets the wonderful mood of this painting!
