Explore the color and composition of seascape dunes as you paint the coastal landscape in pastel! You'll start with a review of photo references complete with tips on how to take a good photo. Then move into a lesson on what makes a strong painting composition with cropping and design techniques to add focus and interest to your coastal painting—the drama of the light is key here.

Get started using pastels with an underpainting made from a limited palette of warm and cool color and values that will become your "map" for additional layers of pastel to come. Final steps to add and layer sky, background dunes and grasses (tips for natural greens!), and paint the foreground dune in light and shadow bring the pastel painting to life.
