    2. Great video! I first watched his video on designing landscapes review by Victoria H on 12/15/2016

Great video! I first watched his video on designing landscapes so I had a good foundation in how he structures his paintings. It was good to see him use that foundation in his actual painting. I learned a lot!

Ian Roberts is such a good teacher, articulate, well organized and inspiring. Since I love plein air painting, this video was especially valuable to me. Highly recommended for anyone interested in going to the beautiful outdoors and painting mother nature.

    4. Enjoyed the very methodical way in which he breaks down review by Geeta P on 1/26/2015
      Rating

Enjoyed the very methodical way in which he breaks down the analysis of the scene and then goes on to the more intuitive way of making value shapes to create an effective painting, which also touches the heart, not just represent every detail of the scene. Ian draws several sketches, and then paints one of them, which touches him most and which has the best composition. In the last few minutes he goes back to the analysis of what he has created and then goes about changing some parts, as they lined up too much or did not have some variety, for instance in the shadows. Ian looks to translate the emotive quality of the scene, see it with clarity and then carry through the painting to represent those two aspects all the way till the painting is finished. Sometimes one can get lost in details, so he asks to stand back and go back to the road map one created first in the sketch. Excellent to learn all this before doing plein air painting.

    5. I watched the Ian Roberts videos several times, and each review by Judith M on 10/18/2014

I watched the Ian Roberts videos several times, and each time I learn something more about design and composition. He delivers a nice combination of lecture and demonstration. He's both passionate about painting and articulate about lessons to be learned. I love plein air painting, so for me this was a great video, and I would highly recommend it as well as all of Ian Roberts' videos.

    6. This video was most helpful to plein air painters because review by Barbara G on 10/15/2014
      Rating

This video was most helpful to plein air painters because it begins with taking you outside explaining how to make sense out of the very complex world around us into precise value sketches using simple forms. It is valuable that he does a few sketches of different views before choosing a site, once he demonstrates how to transfer your sketch onto a canvas, he begins explains filling in simple shapes, creating space, and modeling through warm and cool colors, as he approaches the end of his painting, he adds detail and reminds students to do more careful looking then fast painting.

    7. While this video is designed for plein air painters, I review by Leigh A D on 9/5/2014
      Rating

While this video is designed for plein air painters, I found it extremely helpful for studio landscape painting. Great advice - clear and concise and he has a real talent for teaching while doing the demo. Even though he mixes his colors so quickly, I have learned a lot from his "soup" theory and have enjoyed trying that out. One of my favorite instructors!

    11. This video was the best video yet from Mr. Roberts. review by Donna O on 5/11/2014
      Rating

This video was the best video yet from Mr. Roberts. Not only did the lightbulb over my head finally go off, it is more like a chandelier. The process of design and simplification was clarified so well that I can't wait to redesign the painting I am now working on.
