Description

You’ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You love art contests and discovering amazing new artistic talent.
  • You love dramatic, colorful, contemporary western art.
  • You love winter landscapes and the intrepid painters who brave the frigid climes to capture them.

In the December issue of Southwest Art, we present the winners of our much-anticipated annual Artistic Excellence competition. Don’t miss our three winners and 10 honorable mentions reveal their inspirations, their pet peeves, and the most valuable advice they have ever received. And, of course, we’ll share with you their winning artworks.

In this issue we introduce you to two artists presenting very different images of the contemporary West. After years of following the plein-air-painting circuit Scott W. Prior gave up chasing after idyllic scenes of extraordinary beauty to capture the beauty he says is overlooked in “mundane” things and places. Read more about this new passion and how he got here. Lindsey Bittner Graham has always been fascinated with horses. Raised in Louisville, KY, she grew up mucking stalls (in exchange for riding lessons) and photographing steeplechases at Churchill Downs, but for many years it was fashion design that allowed her to make a living with her art. Today Graham once again explores her favorite subject on canvas, but with a new, very western twist. Read more about Graham’s artistic journey and view her dramatic equine art in the December issue of Southwest Art.

Also in the December issue, we introduce you to six artists who, undaunted by winter’s harshness, venture forth to capture brilliant snowy landscapes en plein air.

Explore our previews of holiday-season shows in galleries from coast to coast, including New York, NY; Austin, TX; and Culver City, CA.

Other columns in the December issue of Southwest Art include:
