You’ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You love paintings of the West on a grand and highly detailed scale.
  • You love exploring the best museum shows around the West.
  • You love exploring the award-winning artworks from art competitions.

In the January 2016 issue of Southwest Art we’ll take you on a tour of some of the most important western art exhibits on view this year in museums around the country, from the Eiteljorg Museum’s Grand Canyon exhibit in Indianapolis to the Edward S. Curtis photography exhibit at the Palm Springs Art Museum in California. Also in this issue, you’ll meet artists Don Coen and Adair Payne, two painters capturing unique visions of their homelands. Coen, who grew up on the farms and ranchlands of eastern Colorado, creates large-scale airbrushed images informed by a reverence for the rural landscape, its animal inhabitants, and the people who work it. Payne, who now makes his home in Utah, continues to paint the California landscapes of his youth. “My goal,” he says, “is to find a fleeting spectacle of beauty in the mundane and simple landscape.”

In this issue we also bring you a sampling of the winning artworks from the 32nd Annual Art Competition conducted by our sister publication, The Artist’s Magazine; a calendar of some of the most popular art shows for 2016; and previews of gallery and museum art shows from Colorado to California.
