Details

You’ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You love bronze sculpture and discovering the rising stars of the genre.

  • You love 3-D art in diverse media, such as wood, stone, bronze, and more.

  • You love to explore art shows, summer art festivals, and plein-air shows.

In the July 2014 issue of Southwest Art you’ll meet sculptors Liz Wolf and Greg Woodard. Wolf, whose simplified, stylized sculpture has become a favorite of western collectors, credits her uncommon, storybook childhood for her creativity and interest in art. Discover the various sources of her artistic inspiration in this month’s issue.

Utah sculptor Woodard began his career as a bird carver, but sculpting in clay changed everything. “I loved the speed, the freshness, the fluidity you can get,” he says of the medium. Explore the evolution of Woodard’s artistic process and subject matter in the July issue of Southwest Art.

In this issue you’ll also meet painters Peggi Kroll-Roberts and Romona Youngquist and take a tour of landscape painter Robert Moore’s Idaho studio. Kroll-Roberts paints life’s tranquil, beautiful moments and is irritated by artists who think pretty isn’t cool. Her simplified, color-rich works are devoid of the angst or gloom she finds unnecessary in her own artwork. Landscape painter Youngquist says it is her mission to persuade people to stop and see the beauty around them. Follow the mostly self-taught artist’s adventurous journey from California to Alaska and finally western Oregon, where she paints the quiet drama of the rural landscape.

Also in this issue: Meet 16 sculptors bringing form to their personal visions. Get the first look at our new column, Artists of Note, where we introduce you to the work of even more skilled artists who work in a wide range of media. Explore the numerous July art shows around the country, from plein-air shows and festivals in Colorado and Wyoming to gallery shows from Santa Fe to Jackson Hole.
