You'll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You love contemporary interpretations of the West, from the indomitable women who work its ranches and ranges to its sprawling, rugged, pristine wilderness.

  • You love renderings of everyday moments that elevate the ordinary to an art form.

  • You love exploring the high season in Santa Fe: the art shows, openings, and, of course, Indian Market!

In the August 2016 issue of Southwest Art we look at contemporary artistic interpretations of the West. North Texas artist Donna Howell-Sickles grew up on a farm at a time when women enjoyed little autonomy. Her admiration of the persevering and indispensable women in her midst gave rise to her renderings of the everyday superwoman: the American cowgirl. In northern New Mexico, Jane Starks brings viewers into the Land of Enchantment's golden landscape, rendering it in gouache and watercolor. Returning to the same areas repeatedly, the artist captures the essence of a place, not only in the moment, but over time.

Also in this issue, we feature wildlife artist Chad Poppleton-whose singular career focus has been to become an artist-and Andre Kohn, who captures the magic of everyday moments in heavily textured canvases that boast dynamic color with a minimalistic palette. And we meet eight artists from New Mexico, working in a range of styles and media.

It's high season in the art world, and in this issue you can preview the must-see shows, auctions, and events around the West.
