Southwest Art August 2017 Print Edition

Quick Overview

Explore new perspectives on western art with the August issue of Southwest Art. Meet sculptor Rebecca Tobey and two oil painters creating western landscapes and animal portraits with a distinctly contemporary twist, and preview art shows across the West.

You’ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You love fresh, more contemporary interpretations of the West.
  • You love exploring new and emerging, award-winning artists.
  • You love attending summer art shows, festivals, and plein air events.

In the August 2017 issue of Southwest Art we explore new interpretations of western art. We open with Rebecca Tobey, who—since the loss of her art mentor, collaborator, and husband, Gene—has undergone a journey to develop her own personal vision. Explore her stylized-animal ceramic sculptures, adorned with sgraffito and glaze designs, and her bronze sculptures. Painters Elsa Sroka and Jeffery Pugh explore western themes in oil paint, and both often depict cows, though neither has a long history with them. Sroka’s canvases crop in to capture the emotions that make bovines, like humans, individuals. Or the artist gives them a wholly different experience than one expects: “Why do cows always have to be in rural settings?” she asks. “I want them to have a more contemporary twist.” Finally, discover the underlying meaning that Utah landscape artist Jeffery R. Pugh brings to his farm and ranch palette-knife paintings.

Also in this issue, we look at more traditional western work by Utah artist Jim C. Norton; the plein-air offerings of young, award-winning Maryland artist Hiu Lai Chong; and preview art shows and auctions across the West.
