Southwest Art January 2018 Print Edition

Quick Overview

Plan a year of fine-art events with our “Collector’s Preview” in the January 2018 issue of Southwest Art. Plus, explore the work of more than three dozen emerging artists and our three feature artists: Bill Baker, Andy Taylor, and Cindy Wilbur.

You’ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:
  • You love scheduling and plotting your most-important art events for the coming year.

  • You love art contests and perusing the winners to find new, young talent to follow.

  • You love the intense colors of pastels and the vibrant traditions of centuries-old cultures.

  • You love exploring the West’s diverse landscapes as seen through the eyes and the hearts of talented artists.

In the January 2018 issue of Southwest Art we bring you a year’s worth of fine-art events to add to your calendar. Pick and choose between the year’s biggest auctions, western art shows, and festivals from the Masters of the American West in Los Angeles, CA, to the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, SC, and from the Coors Western Art show, the first week in January, to the Santa Fe Art Auction at the tail end of the year. Also in this issue we bring you dozens of award-winning fine artists, whose work is just starting to capture the attention of judges and jurors. Explore the work of our 10 Artists to Watch as well as chosen entries of more than two dozen finalists from the annual art competition presented by our sister publication the Artists Magazine.

Finally, peruse the works of our three featured artists. Pastel painter Bill Baker vividly remembers the “Ah-ha!” moment which sent him down the artist’s road, but the search for his personal subject matter required many more miles and remote expeditions to define. Read more about his legendary world travels and enjoy the colorful pastel figurative works that result in the January issue. California landscape painter Cindy Wilbur has been creating art since she was in grade school, but she had to overcome a series of obstacles—including a period of paralysis—before she could finally focus her attention and paint brushes on the landscapes that inspire her. For Andy Taylor, art is about the discovery of the landscape within a day’s drive of his Western Slope home in Carbondale, CO. Having been raised in the East, the artist relocated to the area after attending college in Colorado Springs. His paintings are a perpetual exploration of the western landscape and the many ways of translating it on canvas.
