Description

You?ll love this issue of Southwest Art if:

  • You?re ready to plan your most-important fine-art events of the coming year.
  • You love surveying the best works from national art competitions to find undiscovered talent to follow and collect.
  • You love the brilliant colors and textures of pastel artworks.
  • You love seeing the different ways artists interpret the landscape and bring it to life on the canvas.

In the January 2018 issue of Southwest Art you?ll find dozens of world-class art-collecting opportunities to add to your 2018 calendar, from the Coors Western Art show in Denver the first week of January, to the Santa Fe Art Auction at the other end of the year. Also in this issue you?ll find dozens of award-winning emerging artists whose work has been turning heads in art competitions. In our ?Artists to Watch? feature, we talk to 10 oil painters we will be keeping an eye on, artists whose works are already garnering top honors at major shows and eliciting invitations to prestigious exhibitions. In ?Jurors? Choice? you?ll find more than two dozen entries that made it to the final round of jurying in the annual art competition presented by our sister publication the Artists Magazine. Explore works from all five categories?Abstract/Experimental, Animals/Wildlife, Landscape, Portrait/Figure and Still Life/Interior?and discover the inspiration for each piece.

Finally, take a look at the work of our three featured artists: Bill Baker travels the world visiting indigenous peoples who maintain centuries old traditions. These colorful cultures and warm human interactions inspire his vibrant pastel paintings. Cindy Wilbur was always inspired to create art, but becoming an artist proved challenging. Through sheer determination, and the support of family and friends, she rose above one life-changing obstacle after another to finally do what she really loved: capture the California landscape in oils. Originally from Pennsylvania, Andy Taylor fell in love with the landscape of the West while attending college in Colorado and relocated to the Rockies when he was finished with school. He has been painting ever since. Taylor approaches painting as exploration and discovery, both of the landscape itself and the ways to capture it in paint. Read more about our featured artists and explore art happenings around the West in the January issue!
