  • You love artwork inspired by nature.
  • You love the art of the flower, the vibrant or restorative still life.
  • You love to explore the vastly different ways artists interpret similar subject matter.

In the June 2017 issue of Southwest Art we bring you five artists who find the inspiration for their work in the natural world around them. Migrating with the seasons between Tucson, AZ, in the winter and Copper Mountain, CO, in the summer, landscape painter Darcie Peet penetrates the backcountry—both in the Desert Southwest and alpine locations all over the West—to find the scenic “hidden jewels” to inspire her canvases. In North Carolina, Ralph Grady James follows the migratory patterns of the shorebirds that pass through the Outer Banks on their semiannual journeys north and south. On remote stretches of the islands, he sets up camp to observe and photograph the motion of the land and sea, as well as the birds found there. This motion of life James distills onto his canvases. Two thousand miles away in Ojai, CA, painter Steven Curry borrows from the passion of the early California Impressionists to create transcendent landscapes that he hopes bring joy to their viewers. In the heart of the Southwest, Santa Fe resident Hib Sabin carves animal sculptures that explore universal themes about the human condition through myth and symbol. And, outside of Jackson, WY, Jennifer L. Hoffman paints the landscapes and wildlife around her Grand Teton home. Read more about these five artists and explore their work, inspired by the beauty of the natural world, in the June issue.

Also in this issue, explore the colorful world of flowers with six artists who focus on floral still lifes.
