You'll love this issue of Southwest Art if:
  • You love the bold look of the New West.
  • You love exploring the variety of ways artists interpret the landscape with paint and brush.
  • You love exploring animals and wildlife through the artist's eye.

In the May 2017 issue of Southwest Art we feature five artists across the country from Chicago, IL, to Santa Barbara, CA. Mary Qian, a native of Shanghai, came to the United States in 2002 to get formal art training. Today the Chicago-based artist, who once created graphic battlefield scenes for one of America's highest-grossing video games, paints sophisticated and evocative portraits of real people in the world around her. In Bozeman, MT, Michael Blessing combines his love of figurative work with his childhood fascination with neon signs, creating contemporary, illuminated, often humorous visions of the West. In Nebraska, Todd A. Williams mounts a monumental exhibition five years in the making-a celebration of the state's 150-year anniversary-that comprises over 100 paintings depicting the state's historic scenes and famous people. In the Northwest, plein-air painter Ned Mueller continues to capture the landscapes and peoples of the Americas as he embarks on new adventures across the Atlantic. And, finally, on the shores of the California coast, landscape painter Dennis Doheny captures the pristine beauty and drama of his native state from the Sierra Nevadas to its rocky coasts.

Also in this issue, you'll find previews of art shows and art auctions across the West as well as a selection of artists whose work is inspired by animals and wildlife.
