I've all three of Michael Reardon's instructional DVDs, and I think this one the best. That's not a slight to the other two, by any means; "Landscapes," though, appears to be a bit more intricate in detail and process. And it's process where Michael Reardon excels: Painting in-studio, he walks the viewer steadily through his approach, and along the way offers insight into mixing various color combinations. It's his attention to value studies initially, however, that changed my thinking, for he altogether abandons any original photo and relies singularly on those tonal values. I'm a professor myself, and so I admire and respect good pedagogy; Michael Reardon offers just that: sound teaching, good information, and a thoughtful approach to painting.
There's a lot of great things about this video - Michael Reardon's artistic and technical ability, plus his calm and explanatory demeanour, the explanation of tools & paint colours used, plus the choice of and explanation of the composition all make for a really outstanding video. I already own a book or two of the artist's and find his complexity and artistic interpretation to really have a lot of depth, yet the results also leave a great amount of viewer interpretation. There's no doubt I will be following and purchasing more instruction materials by this artist. Well done!!
I ordered all three of his instruction videos, bundled for online downloads; landscape, city scape and waterscape. They are worth every penny. His instruction is detailed, methodical and full of the many secrets of experienced watercolorists.
Excellent enjoy it very much Very informative. Would recommend
I just finished watching this in stages. After seeing his lovely watercolors in his book, it was great to see how he approached a painting. He uses a limited palette and thinks through what parts to leave the natural paper color This is very effective in setting up contrasts in value. His description of how much water should blended with the paint (low-fat, full fat, etc.) is very helpful since most instructors aren't as specific with this very important point in watercolor painting. He is very clear in his language. Highly recommend this lesson.
A very nice presentation of Michael's way of painting in watercolor. The video shows very clearly his (peculiar but effective, in my opinion) brush strokes (for foliage, for example) and his way of working wet in wet but also with carefully planned glazings. The video is litterally "sprinkled" with useful tips and remarks. I have purchased a number of very good video's and e-books from NLS over the past few years, but this one is definitely one of my favorites! Highly recommended!
