Getting started in watercolor painting can be frustrating and challenging for many artists. Author Michael Reardon, himself, was so frustrated by his college survey class that he wrote off the use of watercolors. It took a bit of inspiration from John Singer Sargent ten years later to convince him to give it another try. It’s lucky for him that he did, as he discovered the wonders and joy that come from knowledge of watercolor painting. You too can enjoy the pleasure achieved having this skill by learning from Michael’s experiences and body of work.

Michael has created a well written step by step source for beginning and experienced water colorists guiding us through the development of a watercolor painting. He explains in simple easily understood language the process of developing an understanding of colors, perspective (both atmospheric and geometric), focal points and light and color values. As a beginner water colorist, I acquired this book prior to attending a workshop with him this past April and continue to use it as I seek to understand good watercolor techniques. His style of explaining the process of creating good watercolor paintings is simple, direct and easily understood. This is a resource I will continue to use for years to come.
Michael's book is one of the most comprehensive books I have read on watercolor techniques. The book is divided up into 9 chapters that build on one another. I was fortunate to be able to attend a 5 day workshop and had Michael as the instructor. He taught us many of the exciting ways to use value studies, focal point and a limited palette for best painting success. I highly recommend this book for all watercolor artists.
Reardon's book is inspirational as well as pragmatic, offering clear instruction and information explaining how he uses color and technique to produce his luminous paintings, and helps beginning to professional artists learn and refresh their own skills. Many chapters also offer inspiration to "dive into" watercolor for the first time or 150th! I collect technique books according to styles I like and want to try, and Reardon's is now the star of my collection...I re-read parts and refer to other parts often. It really has improved and expanded my skills.
Michael Reardon makes a nice presentation on the topic. The demos are very helpful to watch a drawing tranform to a completed work. He references Jean Dobie, whose seminal work is a timeless reference. This book is excellent for beginner and even advanced watercolorists, although there is a bit of beginning technique. It doesen't hurt to hear his philosophy. If you like his style, this is an excellent book along with Richard Taylor's work.
I have been painting with watercolor for 13 years, taken classes and had many paintings published in magazines to illustrate stories. I found his book well written, easy to follow, with good information and good reminders of things to think about while painting - like distilling complicated scenes into a few simple shapes, checking values, hard vs soft edges. It's an easy book for a new watercolor artist to follow.
Let me first say that I am not an artist at all, I even have a hard time making my stick figures look good....but I do know how to appreciate beautiful art and Michael Reardom knows how to create it. This book is a wonderful introduction to his technique and the process that he follows h to come out with the amazing pieces that he produces. When I look at some of his paintings I am in awe as to how he can make everything come together so perfectly . He has written this wonderful book to help the reader understand how a watercolor is developed into a beautiful finished piece . Full of illustrations of his work, I was totally taken with his talent and his ability to explain his technique. Thoroughly enjoyed this book......it stays on my coffee table for all to read.
